Snow Day Hair DIY: Strengthening Egg Shampoo

If you're on the East Coast, you're likely facing some serious snow. Those of us taking a snow day in NYC are using this as the perfect time to indulge in a little DIY haircare. In case the snow has you hunkered down in your home too, we've got a handy shampoo recipe from Indie Lee, founder of her eponymous eco-friendly skincare line, made from ingredients found in your kitchen cabinets.

Find Out How to Preserve Your Hair After the JUMP!

Ingredients:

One egg
One teaspoon olive oil
One teaspoon lemon juice
One teaspoon castile soap or mild unscented shampoo
Half a cup water

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a blender and whip until smooth. Use a spoonful of the mixture as a shampoo on wet hair. Rinse shampoo out completely. The mixture can be stored in the refrigerator for up to four days for continued use.

Benefits:

Lee says the key ingredient in this magical mixture is the protein-rich egg, which helps to strengthen hair follicles, reduce breakage and split ends, and detangle strands. The protein found in the egg thickens limp hair while acting as a conditioner and moisturizer at the same time, she says. And unlike commercial shampoos, eggs allow hair to retain natural oils for a brilliant shine.

So put your snow day to good use and treat your strands to a little all-natural healing.
