TOMS Debuts a New Line of Bags with a Purpose

Each year, 40 million mothers give birth in unsafe conditions. That staggering statistic, combined with becoming a parent himself, inspired TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie to introduce handbags to the brand's lineup of giving-focused accessories and shoes.

The new TOMS handbags line ($28–$298) includes three collections—handmade Artisan bags, travel-inspired backpacks and duffles, and campus and tech bags. Crafted in materials including canvas and leather, there's a handbag to fit every style personality. We particularly love the Black Leather Canvas Caravan Backpack ($248) and the Linen Woven Wanderer Duffel ($148).

Each bag adheres to TOMS' famous one-for-one purchasing policy: When you buy a bag, TOMS will provide a birth kit—which includes necessities such as gloves, soap and sterile surgical blades—and training to medical staff in medical centers around the world that cater to women in need of a safe place to give birth.

According to the United Nations Population Fund, mothers are up to 80 percent less likely to develop an infection with training and proper materials to provide a safe delivery—and almost half of newborn deaths can be prevented. This is exactly the positive change TOMS hopes to help bring about with sales of its bags.
